Oedheim Castle

The origins of the complex date back to the late 12th or early 13th century, built by the Lords of Weinsberg after the Staufer victory of 1140. Its strategic location secured an important Kocher ferry. The original defensive structure included a fortified residential tower, an inner courtyard, a castle wall, and a neck ditch. In 1335, the Lords of Weinsberg sold the Lordship of Scheuerberg, including Oedheim, to the Archbishopric of Mainz, but initially retained the castle. In 1449, the castle fell to the Electoral Palatinate and in 1484 to Württemberg. The Capler von Oedheim, who had been resident in Oedheim since 1235, were later enfeoffed with the castle.
