Oettingen Castle in the Bavarian Donau-Ries region continues to serve as a private residence and preserves art treasures and furniture from past centuries within its rooms.

History+

The construction of the Princely Residential Castle Oettingen took place between 1679 and 1687 under the direction of Karl Engel, brother of the master builder Jakob Engel. A Baroque stucco ceiling by Mathias Schmuzer from Wessobrunn graces the Golden Salon, whose walls are additionally decorated with Rococo stucco. The Golden Room features Rococo furniture and portraits, including one of a princess of Oettingen-Wallerstein, who was a lady-in-waiting to Empress Maria Theresia. The Red Room showcases 18th-century furniture, a faience stove, and a portrait of Duchess Christine Luise of Oettingen-Oettingen, Empress Maria Theresia's grandmother.
