Oettingen Castle

The Princely Residence Castle Oettingen was built between 1679 and 1687 and is privately owned by the family of Oettingen-Spielberg. The construction was supervised by Karl Engel, brother of Jakob Engel, the Eichstätt prince-bishop's master builder. In the so-called Golden Room, in addition to Rococo furniture, paintings are exhibited, including the portrait of Princess zu Oettingen-Wallerstein, who was a lady-in-waiting to Empress Maria Theresia. In the Red Room, 18th-century furniture is displayed along with a faience stove and the portrait of Duchess Christine Luise von Oettingen-Oettingen, grandmother of Empress Maria Theresia. The Golden Salon was decorated by Mathias Schmuzer from Wessobrunn with a baroque stucco ceiling, and the walls are adorned with Rococo stucco. The large portrait shows Johann Aloys I zu Oettingen-Spielberg, who was elevated to princely status in 1734. He was the nephew of the castle's builder. In the ballroom, Mathias Schmuzer's stucco is also predominant. Due to the acoustics of the hall, the Oettingen Residence Concerts take place here in summer.
