Church of Our Lady of Consolation

The church was first mentioned in 1201. The Gothic choir was completed around 1300 and vaulted with a star vault in the 15th century; the nave was built as a three-aisled pseudobasilica from 1587 to 1589. After severe destruction in the Thirty Years' War in 1634, the church was rebuilt in 1691 and 1692. Between 1534 and 1699, the church was Protestant. In 1707, the church became Protestant again and served as the Protestant parish church of St. Blasius and Speratus for the Protestant community in Ohlau until 1945. In 1881, a hurricane destroyed the baroque spire of the bell tower. In 1886, the church was redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style. At the same time, the church tower was erected in the Neo-Gothic style with a pointed spire, which still characterizes the cityscape today. Between 1970 and 1972, the technology in the church building was modernized. In the year, the church was declared a sanctuary.

Overall, the church extends over five bays in the nave and two bays in the lower choir and is 50 m long and 30 m wide. The church tower, standing on a square floor plan, has a height of 62 m with its Neo-Gothic structure. Despite its eventful past, the church has preserved a remarkable interior: in addition to some Renaissance epitaphs, the Renaissance pulpit and the baroque organ deserve attention; the main altar is Neo-Gothic. Furthermore, there are galleries with round-arch arcades in the northern side aisle.
