In the municipality of Oppurg in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia, Germany, Oppurg Castle, a Baroque castle from the 18th century, stands at an elevation of approximately 224 meters above sea level.

History+

The origins of the current castle date back a long way. As early as 1074, a fortress was built on this site by Margrave Wiprecht von Groitzsch. This moated castle, first documented in 1354, was later named Friedrichstein by the Lords of Brandenstein from Ranis and expanded into a fortification. In 1705, the old castle was demolished to make way for the current Baroque building. Between 1705 and 1708, C. von Rumohr had the castle built for his daughter Anna Sophia von Rumohr, the widow of Hans Haubold von Einsiedel.
