In Ortenberg, at the end of the Kinzig Valley, is Ortenberg Castle. The origins of the complex date back to the 11th or 12th century. Today, the castle houses a youth hostel.

History+

The original castle complex was built in the 11th or 12th century by the Zähringer family to secure the Kinzig Valley. During the Hohenstaufen era, the castle served as the seat of the regional bailiffs of Ortenau, functioning as an imperial tax center, court, and customs authority. In the 15th century, the complex was expanded with the addition of defensive towers, known as rondels. In 1678, the castle suffered its first destruction during the Franco-Dutch War by the troops of Louis XIV. After a reconstruction, it was destroyed again in 1697, after which the official seat of the bailiffs was moved to Offenburg.
