In the market town of Ortenburg stands Ortenburg Castle, also known as Alt-Ortenburg or Vorderschloss. It served for a long time as the residence of the immediate counts of Ortenburg and today presents itself in a form largely shaped by renovations in the 16th century.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to around 1120, when Count Rapoto I of Ortenburg had the first castle built on a hill above the Wolfach valley. This fortress became the center of the County of Ortenburg. The castle experienced several destructions and reconstructions, including in 1192 during a feud and in 1504 during the Landshut War of Succession. Count Joachim of Ortenburg had the castle rebuilt in the Renaissance style between 1562 and 1575, with the medieval outer bailey being demolished.
