Ostramondra Castle

Ostramondra was first mentioned in the year 876. The place belonged to the County of Stolberg as a fief of the Dukes of Saxony. In 1461, the Counts of Stolberg enfeoffed Hans Knauth with the manor, the village, and the jurisdiction. The noble Knauth family held the village as a fief until 1670. The Counts of Beichlingen, the families von Bünau, von Bischoffwerder, and von Krosigk followed as owners of the castle and manor.

In April 1945, US troops occupied the village. They also occupied the castle and expelled Karl-Dedo von Krosigk and his sister Elisabeth from it. After the Americans were replaced by the Red Army in early July 1945, both were dispossessed without compensation in 1945.

The moated castle dates from the 18th century and was expanded after 1829. The manor comprised 438 ha and consists of very large and solid farm buildings. During the GDR era, it housed a large sheep farm. Currently (2010), the buildings are largely empty. The castle has been restored and, along with the park, is in private ownership.
