Ottenburg Castle

Ottenburg Castle is a castle in Ottenburg in the municipality of Eching in the district of Freising. Ottenburg is first mentioned in 750 as "Outinpurg". The fief, which had been episcopal-Freisingian since at least 1070, was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Ottenburg-Grögling. Around 1150/58, the medieval hilltop castle was expanded under Bishop Otto of Freising. In 1212, Ottenburg became a closed Hofmark with lower jurisdiction through the acquisition of Eching and a farm in Günzenhausen; Deutenhausen also belonged to the Hofmark. The Freisingian administrator (medieval) had his seat in the stately Ottenburg Castle. In 1632, the Swedes caused great damage during the Thirty Years' War. At the end of the 17th century, the castle was converted into a "princely-episcopal pleasure palace".

With the secularization in Bavaria, the castle came into the possession of the Bavarian state in 1803. A partial demolition of the castle took place. The remaining structures were transformed into a late-classical villa with a hip roof. In 1845, the castle chapel was rebuilt at its current location. The castle is now privately owned.
