Ottenburg Castle, a historic complex in the municipality of Eching in the district of Freising, looks back on a long history dating back to the early Middle Ages. Originally a hilltop castle, it was transformed several times over the centuries and now serves as a private residence.

History+

The first documented mention of Ottenburg as “Outinpurg” dates back to 750. From at least 1070, it was a fief of the Bishops of Freising and served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Ottenburg-Grögling. In the mid-12th century, specifically around 1150/58, the medieval hilltop castle was expanded under Bishop Otto of Freising. Through the acquisition of Eching and a farm in Günzenhausen in 1212, Ottenburg developed into a self-contained Hofmark with its own jurisdiction, which also included Deutenhausen. The Freising administrator resided in the stately Ottenburg Castle. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered significant damage from the Swedes in 1632.
