Otting Castle

The origins of Otting date back to 830, when the village was first documented. In the 11th and 12th centuries, a medieval castle was built there, but it was later destroyed. The current Otting Castle was erected in 1610 next to the remains of this old castle. The castle changed hands multiple times, including the families Schenk von Stauffenberg, von Freyberg, von Westernach, the Späth family from Zwiefalten, and the von Rehling. In 1816, Baron Friedrich von Schönfeld, the half-brother of King Max I of Bavaria, acquired the estate. A year later, his family was elevated to the rank of count and subsequently called themselves Counts of Otting and Fünfstetten.
