Ovelgönne Castle (Eidinghausen)

The first documented mention of the Ovelgönne estate dates back to 922. Originally owned by Abdinghof Monastery in Paderborn, it was referred to as a “small estate in Edinhusen” in 1126, a possession confirmed by Pope Lucius III in 1183. In 1353, the estate passed to Bishop Dietrich of Minden through an exchange agreement. A few years later, in 1362, Bishop Gerhard of Minden pledged Ovelgönne to Ludolf von Mönnichhusen, whose descendants held the property for a long time. In 1400, the estate was pledged as ransom to Simon and Bernhard von Lippe. Around 1458, the name “Ovelgünne” appeared for the first time. Agnes von Münchhausen, married to Bernd von Reden-Pattensen, inherited Ovelgönne in 1587, bringing the von Reden family into possession. This family, which included the Landdrost of Minden, Bernd Ernst von Reden, retained the estate until 1733.
