Pack (Roseck) Castle

To protect the small community and the road over the Packsattel, a small defensive structure was already built in the 12th century. Emperor Otto III gifted the strategically important area to the Eppensteiners.

After their extinction, the defensive structure passed to the Wildoniers in the 12th century through inheritance. After 1300, the modest fortress again came as an inheritance to the Wallseer, who attached it to their dominion of Krems. When Hartnit von Pettau acquired it in 1362, it was already called "Veste Roseck". He pledged it to Konrad Plankenwarter. Towards the end of the 14th century, the latter pledged it to Otto von Stubenberg. In 1403, it passed by purchase as a free property to Friedrich and Ulrich von Stubenberg.

Friedrich sold the estate in 1420 to Hermann Graf von Montfort, who again connected it with the dominion of Krems. In 1543, the Counts of Montfort exchanged the estates of Pack and Modriach with Franz von Ungnad for estates near Eggenfeld. As the tax arrears of the estate, neglected under Hans and Ludwig von Ungnad, accumulated, it was seized by the Styrian Landschaft and sold in 1584 to Baron Siegmund Friedrich von Herberstein. Thus, it was united for the third time with the dominion of Krems. In 1629, Max Laymann was the lord of the castle, in 1634 Salomon von Maillegg. In 1638, the estate came into the possession of the Counts of Saurau. They attached it to their dominion of Ligist in 1750. The castle was sold to the municipality of Pack in 1870.

Nothing remains of the former defensive structures. They were already dismantled in the 17th century. Today's castle is a Renaissance building from the beginning of the 16th century. The castle now serves as a rectory. In the later 20th century, a youth home of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau was established in the north wing.
