In Bergheim-Paffendorf in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Paffendorf Castle is a moated castle. It has Neo-Gothic architecture and today serves as an information and administration center.

History+

The first mention of a Paffendorf bailiwick dates back to 1230. After 1516, the property came into the possession of Wilhelm von dem Bongart through Maria Mascherel von Rode, his wife. Between 1531 and 1546, Wilhelm von dem Bongart built the current brick castle in Renaissance style on the foundations of an older structure. For over 400 years, Paffendorf was a secondary residence of the von dem Bongart family before becoming its main seat at the beginning of the 19th century.
