Paspels Castle

Paspels Castle, also known as Sins Castle, is located in the municipality of Paspels in Domleschg in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.

Previously, the center of Paspels was located west of the current village near Alt-Süns Castle. It can therefore be assumed that the site where the castle now stands was already built upon.

It is documented, however, that the castle was newly built around 1695 by Johann Viktor Travers von Ortenstein (1646–1725), presumably over a predecessor building. Parts of the main wing, which are no longer recognizable as such, probably date from the time of construction. The grand staircase with railing on the south side was built around 1710.

In 1730, the castle was completely rebuilt by the builder's son of the same name. The staircase and paneled rooms with Régence paintings date from this period. This reconstruction probably still forms the basis of the overall layout of the complex as it presents itself today. The portraits of the von Salis-Soglio family were painted in 1757 by Angelika Kauffmann.

Further alterations were made by Lieutenant General Victor von Travers, who had the chapel, consecrated on April 25, 1760, installed.

The last major renovation took place in 1892/93 under Colonel Friedrich von Tscharner with a redesign of the exterior. At that time, sgraffito decorations, the carved roof structure in the Swiss timber style, and the polygonal tower with a hood and lantern on the west side were created. The architect was Nicolaus Hartmann sen. from St. Moritz.

In 1911, the castle passed to Minister Ferdinand von Salis-Soglio. Today it is privately owned and operated as a hotel. It is one of the "Swiss Historic Hotels". An exterior restoration took place in 2002.

To the south of the complex is a spacious garden with a baroque section, a lily pond, and a pavilion at the edge of the terrain.
