Patthorst Castle (Steinhagen)
The Patthorst Manor or Patthorst Castle is a manor house on a moated island in Steinhagen, Ostwestfalen, in the district of Gütersloh. The estate, surrounded by a park, is privately owned.
Patthorst Manor was originally a hunting lodge of the Counts of Ravensberg. At the end of the fourteenth century, it became the ancestral seat of the von Closter family. The first known resident was Wilhelm von Closter, who received the estate as a fief in 1463. In 1486, he was Marshal to Duke Adolph of Jülich and Berg, Count of Ravensberg.
The von Closter family died out with the death of Caspar Heinrich († 1813) and his brother Franz Wilhelm, who was a Royal Captain during the storming of the Zahlbacher Schanze near Mainz in 1794. The heiress of the estate was Therese von Closter, Franz Wilhelm's daughter, who had been married to Karl Christian Heinrich von Eberstein since 1803. Since 1830, he was considered the owner of Patthorst Manor.
A site plan from 1822 shows Patthorst Castle as a moated castle with a manor house and farm buildings. In 1845, the castle was rebuilt, with the farm buildings being moved from the manor house island to the northeast. The now free area, including the vegetable garden, was transformed into a landscape park.
The area in front of the building was structured by circular flowerbeds and led to a landscape garden with winding paths and fountains.
The noble family Eller-Eberstein still inhabits the castle today and manages it for forestry and as an equestrian farm.
Building+
The late Baroque main house of the estate was built in 1773 by the von Closter family. It is presumed that parts of a medieval castle complex were used. At the beginning of the 18th century, the manor house was rebuilt into its current form and supplemented with a hall building in 1850. The building has eight axes and is covered with a shallow half-hipped roof. The facade is structured by a central risalit, crowned by a shallow triangular gable. A grand staircase leads to the driveway and into the surrounding park.
West of the main house is the mausoleum of Canon Carl Heinrich von Closter, built in 1818, and the Grand Cross of Baron Ernst von Eberstein.
