Peilstein Castle

Peilstein Castle is located in the municipality of the same name in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria (Stifterstrasse 12).

The building, located at the exit of Peilstein, stands out due to its size and furnishings. Defensive structures are and were not present. This is due to the fact that the building was erected in 1754 as the seat of the administrator (but never used as such). Peilstein itself belonged to the dominion of the Tannbergs. It is listed in the Marsbach dominion's land register of 1667, which leads to the assumption that Peilstein came into the possession of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau after the death of Chunradt von Tannberg in 1354.

After the abolition of manorial jurisdiction in 1848, the administrative building was no longer needed and the house was sold to a farmer. In the first third of the 19th century, the four-winged, two-story building around a small inner courtyard was extensively rebuilt. The building is now a hook-shaped three-story building with a mansard hip roof and a granite-framed entrance portal from 1828.
