History+
The construction of Pejačević Castle took place between 1800 and 1804 under the patronage of Antun III Count Pejačević of Virovitica and his son Antun IV. It was built on the foundations of an older medieval castle. The plans for the late Baroque building originated from the Viennese architect N. Roth. The Pejačević family, who had already received the Virovitica dominion from Empress Maria Theresia in 1753, used the castle as their main seat until it passed out of their possession in 1841. In 1930, the municipality of Virovitica acquired the castle, and after extensive renovations, it was opened in 1953 as a city museum, which has since presented archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical, and other collections.
