Northwest of the town of Penkun, between state road 283 and Lake Schlosssee, lies Penkun Castle, a structure in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and today it is a three-wing complex reflecting various architectural eras.

History+

The history of Penkun Castle begins with the first documentary mention of a castle on this site in 1190. In the 13th century, this fortification was expanded by the Griffin Dukes into a border castle against the Margraviate of Brandenburg. In 1479, Duke Bogislaw X enfeoffed Werner von der Schulenburg with the castle and the town of Penkun. Between 1484 and 1486, he had the castle built in its current form, integrating existing structural elements. A redesign in the Renaissance style took place from 1580 to 1590, likely under the direction of Thaddäus Paglion. The von der Schulenburg family owned the castle until 1615.
