Peppenhoven Castle
Peppenhoven Castle, also known as Pippin's Court, is a former moated castle and current manor house located in the Peppenhoven residential area of the city of Rheinbach, between Swisttal and Morenhoven in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia. The moated castle is one of the oldest buildings in the Voreifel region.
The castle complex formerly belonged to the estates of the Frankish king Pippin and was transferred by him to Prüm Abbey.
The castle's history lists many owners; in the 14th century, Count Wilhelm von Neuenahr was the feudal lord, in 1569 Johann Kessel von Nürburg was enfeoffed with the property by Duke Wilhelm von Jülich, and later the family of Schall von Bell zu Schwadorf came into possession through marriage. In 1697, the Counts von Werl had the main house rebuilt.
In 1717, the Frisian Peter Ludwig Freiherr von Albada was enfeoffed, and in 1744 Freiherr von Martial. In 1811, the family von Vorst zu Lombeck is mentioned as owners, and by 1826, the ancestors of the current owner and resident, Freiherr Maximilian von Böselager.
Description+
The preserved five-bay, two-story brick manor house was built in 1697 on a pond island. On the west side is a gate from around 1700. The small freestanding brick courtyard chapel was built in 1880. The farm buildings, now replaced by modern residential buildings, dated from the 18th century. In 1984, the buildings were placed under monument protection.
