Pfaffikon Castle

The castle's origins date back to the 10th century, when German emperors gifted the estates of Pfäffikon and Wollerau to Einsiedeln Abbey. The monastery built a granary there for natural tributes. In the mid-13th century, Abbot Anselm von Schwanden had the current castle tower constructed to protect monastic revenues and lands. In the early 15th century, under Abbot Burkhard von Weissenburg, residential buildings were added, as the complex also served as an abbot's residence and was henceforth called “Weissenburg”. The castle played a significant role for the monastery, hosting an abbot's election in 1480 and serving as a refuge for monks in 1577 during a major fire in Einsiedeln. It also welcomed important guests such as bailiffs and the papal nuncio and functioned as an administrative center until the 18th century, before being replaced by a new baroque governor's residence. The complex was involved in various conflicts, including the plundering by the Count of Rapperswil (1347/48), the Old Zurich War (1439-1445), the Kappel Wars (1529/31), and the Villmergen Wars (1656, 1712). In 1798, the castle was largely devastated by Napoleonic troops. The remaining walls around the tower were demolished in 1820, while the governor's residence and chapel were rebuilt. The decaying tower roof was replaced in 1839. Between 1986 and 1988, a comprehensive renovation of the chapel, tower, and moat took place.

Pfäffikon Castle is located in Pfäffikon SZ, in the district of Höfe, canton of Schwyz, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 405 meters above sea level.

Today, Pfäffikon Castle serves as a venue for cultural events. The castle tower is used for weddings, family celebrations, and business events. Mass celebrations are still held in the castle chapel.
