Pfaffroda Castle

The origins of Pfaffroda date back to the early 13th century, when secular clerics from Ossegg Monastery established a court here. The first documented mention as a manor house occurred in 1512. Between 1352 and 1389, Peter v. Schönberg acquired the Lordship of Sayda, which included Pfaffroda, as a fief from the Burgraves of Meissen. After the death of the last Burgrave in 1426, the Margraves of Meissen became the new feudal lords. Caspar von Schönberg, who traveled to Rome in 1480 to finance the reconstruction of a church destroyed by fire, had the current castle built between 1575 and 1578. A Renaissance portal with the alliance coat of arms from 1578 is preserved to this day.
