Pfaffstätt Castle

The first documented mention of the locality Pfaffstätt dates back to 1150 with Herrant de phaphesteti. An early medieval fortification was located on the Siedelberg, as evidenced by field names such as Burgstall. After the original Pfaffstätter family, the Rewtter family followed from 1222, under whom the moated castle in the valley was probably built. A 17th-century copperplate engraving by Michael Wening still shows the property as a moated castle with a double hip roof. The Walch family owned the castle from 1503 to 1617, followed by the Schwabpach and the Barons of Vieregg. In 1721, ownership passed to Countess Maria von Wartenberg, who transformed the moated castle into a country estate and had the moat filled in. This was followed by further changes of ownership, including the Lerchenfeld family, the Counts of Taufkirchen, and the Barons of Peckenzell.
