Pfongau Castle

The region around Pfongau was already settled in Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological finds. The village of Pfongau itself has existed since the 8th century. The estate was originally a fief of the Archduchy of Upper Austria. In the 15th century, various owners are mentioned, including Cunrad Öder and Pauls Aller. Emperor Maximilian I enfeoffed Wolfgang Rainer with the property, which later passed to his brothers. Jakob Rainer became the sole lord in 1545. Subsequently, the castle came into the possession of the Ridler von Pfongau family, who are recorded as owners until the end of the 16th century. In 1610, Abraham Graf Uiberacker acquired the castle, which remained in family ownership until 1873.
