Philippsburg Castle, a Baroque palace on the Rhine, was part of the Electoral Residence in Ehrenbreitstein, now a district of Koblenz. Although the castle itself no longer exists, the surviving adjacent buildings still attest to its former importance as a political and cultural center of Trier.

History+

The construction of Philippsburg Castle took place between 1626 and 1632 under Elector Philipp Christoph von Sötern. In view of the threat to Trier during the Thirty Years' War, he moved his residence to this secure location below Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The fortified residential castle was soon drawn into the turmoil of war when French troops occupied the fortress in 1632, which was conquered by the Swedes in 1634. After Sötern's capture in 1635 and the conquest of Trier, imperial troops also liberated Koblenz in 1636. Subsequent electors continued to use the castle as a residence. Adjacent buildings such as the Pagerie (1690-1692), the Dikasterialgebäude (1738-1749), and the Marstall (1762) were added.
