In Braubach, Rhineland-Pfalz, Philippsburg Castle is a structure that documents the evolution of noble residences from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Although little of the original building fabric remains, it now houses the European Castles Institute.

History+

Philippsburg Castle was built between 1568 and 1571 on behalf of Landgrave Philipp II of Hessen-Rheinfels. He desired a new residence in the valley, as the nearby Marksburg no longer met the standards of his time and was unsuitable as a dower house for his wife Anna Elisabeth of Pfalz-Simmern. The Hessian master builder Anton Dauer created the first Renaissance castle on the Middle Rhine here. It included a three-story main house with a facade facing the Rhine, protected by an outer fortification. After the Landgrave's death, Anna Elisabeth resided in the castle from 1583 to 1602. Later, Landgrave Johann the Belligerent used it as a residence from 1643 to 1651, but it subsequently lost its importance and fell into disrepair.
