Pietzpuhl Castle

At the beginning of the 18th century, a castle already existed on this site, but it was replaced in 1730 by a new Baroque building. The patron was Werner von Wulffen, a canon of Halberstadt, whose family had acquired the Pietzpuhl estate. Subsequent generations of the von Wulffen family expanded the complex, which also included two cavalier houses. Queen Luise of Prussia was a guest at Pietzpuhl Castle in 1803. She stayed there as part of an annual troop review held by Frederick the Great since 1748. The French Marshal Bernadotte was also among the guests at the last of these reviews in 1805. The Wulffens maintained contacts with the Prussian royal family, which was also evident in kings and princes becoming godparents to their children. Between 1808 and 1828, Carl von Wulffen laid out an English castle park. Carl von Wulffen was also known as a founder of modern agriculture and implemented his theories on soil improvement on the estates.
