Southwest of Munich in Bavaria lies Planegg Castle, once a moated castle, which still serves as the private residence of the von Hirsch family, the former lords of the Hofmark Planegg.

History+

Planegg was first mentioned in 1409 when Duke Wilhelm III of Bavaria, the then owner, acquired further lands and united them with the estate. In 1425, Wilhelm III elevated the estate to a Hofmark and handed it over to his son Konrad von Egenhofen. After the death of the last male Egenhofen descendant in 1472, Planegg passed to Christoph Lung through marriage. The Lung family owned the castle for several generations until 1613, before it fell to Karl von Villinger for three years. In 1616, Hans Georg von Hörwarth d.Ä. acquired the castle. Due to debts, the fourth generation of the Hörwarths, Johann Josef Anton Franz, was forced to sell the property to Johann Baptist von Ruffin in 1732.
