Plankenfels Castle is on a dolomite rock on the western edge of the village of the same name in the Bayreuth district. This complex, consisting of two main buildings connected by an intermediate structure, is now privately owned.

History+

The Lords of Plankenfels, whose name was first mentioned in 1255 with Konrad von Plankenfels, likely already owned the castle at that time. Its construction is probably related to the older Plankenstein Castle. In 1403, Plankenfels Castle was directly mentioned in documents, when it was held as a fief by the Burgraves of Nuremberg and owned by Jörg von Plankenfels. After the extinction of the Lords of Plankenfels around 1486, the fief passed to the Lords of Wichsenstein, who were named as owners in 1505. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle suffered massive destruction.
