Pöckstein Castle, an example of early Classicist architecture in Carinthia, is situated at the entrance to the Gurktal valley. It is considered the most significant building of its kind in the region.

History+

The castle was constructed between 1778 and 1782 according to the plans of the Salzburg architect Johann Georg von Hagenauer. It replaced a former hammer mill and its manor house. The patron was Bishop Josef II. Franz Anton von Auersperg, who relocated the residence of the Gurk bishops here in 1783 after Straßburg had been damaged by an earthquake in 1767.
