In 1218, a Heinricus de Pechstal is mentioned. He likely resided in a residential tower that was later demolished. In the foundation book of St. Bernhard, Otto II von Maissau appears as the owner of the lordship around 1240. Around this time, the first buildings of the current castle are believed to have been erected.
