Polheim Castle
Polheim Castle, also known as Pollheim Castle, is a historic structure in Wels, Upper Austria. It is closely associated with the noble Polheim family and is one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
History+
The first documented mention of Polheim Castle dates back to 1237, with its construction attributed to the influential Albero von Polheim. The Polheim family, originally from Pollham near Grieskirchen, acquired significant properties in Wels around 1200. In the 16th century, they received permission to build on the city wall, and in 1569, Emperor Maximilian II allowed Andreas von Polheim to break through a gate to the city moat. Due to debts, the Polheim family's property in Wels was dissolved in 1630, and the family died out in Lower Austria in 1909. The castle changed hands several times before being transferred to the city of Wels in 1695. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous alterations and repairs. Between 1878 and 1966, significant parts of the castle were demolished and replaced by residential buildings, drastically altering the medieval complex.
