Polheim Castle
In Wels, Upper Austria, stands Polheim Castle, also known as Pollheim Castle. It is closely associated with the noble Polheim family.
History+
The first documented mention of Polheim Castle dates back to 1237, with its construction attributed to Albero von Polheim. The Polheim family, originally from Pollham near Grieskirchen, acquired properties in Wels around 1200. In the 16th century, they received permission to build on the city wall, and in 1569, Emperor Maximilian II allowed Andreas von Polheim to break through a gate to the city moat. Due to debts, the Polheim family's property in Wels was dissolved in 1630, and the family died out in Lower Austria in 1909. The castle changed hands several times before being transferred to the city of Wels in 1695. Between 1878 and 1966, parts of the castle were demolished and replaced by residential buildings, altering the medieval complex.

Today, Polheim Castle is privately owned and houses an educational institution. The Upper Austrian State Music School is accommodated in a part of the building.
