In the Altenburger Land region of Thuringia, Ponitz Castle rises as a Renaissance structure. Originally a medieval moated castle, it was transformed into its present form in the second half of the 16th century and now serves as a cultural center.

History+

The first documented mention of Ponitz Castle and its then-owner, Fridericus de Ponicz, dates back to 1254, when he appeared as a witness to a donation. The region where Ponitz is located was likely founded by Slavic settlers. In 1349, records indicate the presence of a church and a manor farm at the site. A reconstruction occurred after Abraham von Thumbshirn acquired the knight's estate in 1568: he had the medieval moated castle replaced by a Renaissance building in 1574.
