Poppendorf Castle

The origins of Poppendorf Castle date back to the 13th century, when a castle was built on this site. It was named after Leutold von Poppendorf, a vassal of the Lords of Wildon. With the death of Ulrich von Poppendorf in 1386, the family, which maintained connections with the Fürstenfeld and Preßnitz families, died out. Subsequently, Poppendorf gained the status of a sovereign possession and frequently changed owners. In 1420, Ulrich Pesnitzer acquired the estate, which still belonged to his grandson in 1468. The original “House of Poppendorf” was gradually expanded into a castle. It suffered severe damage in 1605 during the Hungarian invasions.
