In Spittal an der Drau, Carinthia, Porcia Castle is an example of Renaissance architecture north of the Alps. This building, reminiscent of Italian palazzi, has an arcade-lined inner courtyard.

History+

Construction of the castle began in 1534 under the patronage of Count Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg, a Spanish treasurer and confidant of Emperor Ferdinand I. Salamanca, who had acquired the County of Ortenburg in 1524, commissioned Italian architects for the design. However, it was not completed until 1597/98 under his successors. After the Salamanca family died out in 1620, the castle passed to the Widmann family, who sold it in 1662 to the Italian noble family Porcia.
