Poschwitz Castle in Thuringia was for centuries closely associated with the von der Gabelentz family. The card game Skat was invented here in the early 19th century.

History+

The origins of Poschwitz Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when a moated castle under Otto von Poschwitz was first documented between 1264 and 1274. By 1388, ownership had passed to Albrecht I. von der Gabelentz. After a fire destroyed the moated castle in 1507, the current Renaissance castle was built in 1580 by Friedrich von der Gabelentz. In 1806, Hans Carl Leopold von der Gabelentz took over the estate and initiated the redesign of the ponds. Under his patronage, the game of Skat was invented in 1813 during a scholarly gathering. Between 1842 and 1847, the castle was expanded with a neo-Gothic south wing.
