In Pottschach, Lower Austria, is Pottschach Castle, a Renaissance moated castle. It forms a former defensive complex together with the local parish church and is a private estate that is not publicly accessible today.

History+

A moated castle originally stood on the site of the current castle, first appearing in the annals in 1134 with the mention of a Gunterus de Pottschach. The dominion changed hands several times, from the ministerials of the Otakars to the Lords of Kranichberg and then to the sovereign in 1254. After a sale to the Hagen family in 1493 and further changes of ownership, the estate came into the possession of the Lords of Ursenbeck in 1539. Bernhard Ursenbeck had the old castle demolished and the current Renaissance moated castle built in its place.
