Poysbrunn Castle

Poysbrunn Castle is located in the southwest of Poysbrunn, a village belonging to the municipality of Poysdorf in Lower Austria. It lies in the middle of a walled park. The three-story complex has a rectangular courtyard, with adjoining farm buildings and a chapel to the east. To the south, remnants of a moated ditch are present. The castle is first mentioned in a document in 1360. In 1571, it passed to Baron Hans Trautson II. Over time, ownership changed frequently. Today, it is used as an event venue and festive castle. Since 2006, the Lower Austrian Fairy Tale Summer has taken place annually at Poysbrunn Castle.

The core of the south wing dates back to the 14th century. The building was altered in the 16th/17th century and extended upwards in the 18th century. The simple facade with stone-framed windows, gabled roofs, and dormer windows was restored in 1979/80. On the east wing, there is a two-flight open staircase and an aedicule portal with three-quarter columns. The gable field features the coat of arms of the Trautson family. The stair tower in the north was extended in the 19th century with a recessed clock story topped by an onion dome. To the south, the complex can be entered via a barrel-vaulted bridge through a groin-vaulted entrance. In the courtyard with its unarticulated facades, the former ground-floor arcades are located to the north and south; to the west and south, there are profiled stone-framed windows from the end of the 16th century. East of the castle is a four-axis, three-story extension from before 1645, with a hipped gable roof and rendered corner quoins. The farm wings were partly built in the 17th century, the granary probably in the 16th century.

The castle chapel is first mentioned in a document in 1638, but was probably built around the end of the 14th century. A consecration is reported in 1746. The hall building with a three-sided apse and a semi-projecting south tower with a pyramid helmet has pointed arch windows in deep reveals. On the north side, there is a rectangular portal with profiled framing and a broken pediment. In the two-bay interior with stucco rib vaulting and pilaster articulation, remnants of the Baroque furnishings are present. The high altar has a column frame and a broken pediment.
