In Mauthausen, Upper Austria, stands Pragstein Castle, a moated castle which once stood on a rocky island in the Danube. Its architecture, tapering towards the river, protected it from floods and ice masses.

History+

The castle was built between 1491 and 1506 by Ladislaus Prager, then the pledgee of Mauthausen, with imperial permission. After the death of Emperor Frederick III, his successor, Maximilian I, redeemed the pledge, but the Prager family continued to inhabit the castle for some time. Around 1530, the complex fell into disrepair but was restored and militarily occupied in view of the Turkish threat. Pragstein Castle changed hands several times, including Georg Erasmus von Tschernembl, who modernized it in 1603, and later the Meggau and Cavriani families. In 1894, Mauthausen's mayor, Leopold Heindl, acquired the castle before it passed into the possession of the market town in 1901.
