Pratteln Castle, a former moated castle that once lay freely on the village edge and is now surrounded by 19th-century development, stands in the municipality of Pratteln in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. This structure is under the protection of the Swiss Confederation and features a square floor plan, rounded corners, and a tower.

History+

The origins of Pratteln Castle date back to 1275, when it was built by the Lords of Eptingen. An earthquake in 1356 completely destroyed the complex, but the Eptingen family immediately rebuilt it. Financial difficulties and internal conflicts led Hans Friedrich von Eptingen to sell the castle and the village of Pratteln to the city of Basel in 1521 for 5000 guilders.
