Pretzsch Castle is located in Pretzsch, Saxony-Anhalt. It once served as a dowager's residence and today houses a children's home and a special needs school.

History+

The first documented mention of Pretzsch dates back to July 21, 981, when Emperor Otto II donated the locality, then situated in the Gau Nizizi in the County of Diemars, to Memleben Monastery. Between 1694 and 1696, Pretzsch Castle served as the dowager's residence for Eleonore of Saxe-Eisenach, the wife of Elector Johann Georg IV of Saxony. Later, Christiane Eberhardine, the wife of Augustus the Strong, resided at the castle. Her presence led to a cultural and economic flourishing of the town. She was laid to rest in the town church.
