Prielau Castle

The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1425. In 1560, a renovation gave the building its current external appearance. From 1598, the estate was owned by Dietrich Kuen-Belasy, Baron of Chiemsee, and remained princely episcopal property until 1811. Sigmund Christoph von Zeil und Trauchburg was the last prince-bishop to use the castle, whose coat of arms is still visible on the portal today. After the dissolution of the Diocese of Chiemsee by Bavaria, the castle was sold to the sacristan Franz Neumayer. In 1936, Gerty von Hofmannsthal, the widow of the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, acquired the estate and began its restoration. She lived there with her son Raimund and his wife Elisabeth.
