In the municipality of Pudagla on the island of Usedom stands Pudagla Castle, a former residence of Pomeranian dukes. It is an example of the transformation of a religious building into a secular seat of power.

History+

In 1574, Duke Ernst Ludwig of Pomerania had the former abbey of the secularized Pudagla Monastery converted into a dower house for his mother, Duchess Maria of Saxony. From this castle, the ducal office of Pudagla was administered. After the extinction of the Griffin dukes and the division of Pomerania in the Peace of Westphalia, the Pudagla office became a royal Swedish demesne.
