Pürkelgut Castle

Pürkelgut Castle is a moated castle in the east of Regensburg and is considered one of the most important baroque secular buildings in the city.

The castle was built in 1728 under the direction of Johann Michael Prunner for the merchant family Pürkel. Later it was acquired by the Princes of Thurn und Taxis and used as a hunting lodge. During the siege of Regensburg in 1800, the castle briefly housed Napoléon Bonaparte, who recovered from an injury here.

The property features a mansard roof, corner towers, and a semicircular central risalit. The castle is in poor structural condition and was at times threatened with collapse. Due to a lack of financial resources, it could only be emergency-renovated in autumn 2001, with the roof truss being supported, gutters installed, and windows sealed.

The square in front of the castle is the venue for the annual medieval festival Pürkelgutfest as well as various other cultural events, such as concerts or open-air cinema.
