Raab Castle

The first documented mention of the locality Raab dates back to 955. However, a noble seat is only attested in 1145 with the Lords of Rurippe, who were vassals of the Wesener family and died out in the 13th century. Following a partition agreement in 1300, the property passed to the Waldeckers, before changing hands to the Trauner family in 1382. In 1387, Hans Aichberger inherited the castle and the Hofmark Raab. Through marriage, the property fell to the Messenpecker family in 1443 and, after the death of Hanns Messenpeck in 1495, to Nikolaus von Sandizell. Duke Georg of Bavaria confiscated the estate in 1496 and sold it in 1500 to Bishop Ludwig of Chiemsee. Bishop Sebastian Cataneus had the castle largely rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century. Ownership changed frequently, including to the Counts of Maxlrain (1685), the Barons of Neuhaus (1704), the Counts Tattenbach-Rheinstein (1717), and the Counts Arco-Valley (1821).
