Radeck Castle

In the municipality of Bergheim in the Austrian state of Salzburg is Radeck Castle, originally a fortress that was later converted into a castle. Although only partially preserved today, it is closely linked to the fortunes of the Salzburg region.

The origins of Radeck Castle date back to the 13th century, when the Lords of Radeck, Salzburg ministeriales, were first documented. The construction of the castle is dated to around 1200. It served as the seat of the Radeck regional court, thus being a center of local jurisdiction. In 1334, the complex passed into the possession of the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg. Later, Radeck belonged to Hans III. Präzl, who undertook renovations and had a chapel built in 1516. After the Peasants' War, during which the castle was attacked and devastated by Salzburg citizens in 1525, it was rebuilt. Numerous changes of ownership followed, including Dr. Paul Rettinger and Hieronymus Meitting, who invested considerable sums in its restoration.
