Randegg Castle

The origins of the estate date back, possibly to the 12th century, when a first castle was built. It is believed that a Roman fort served as its foundation. The castle was first documented in 1214 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Randegg. This family produced figures, including Burkhard II von Randegg, Bishop of Konstanz, and the knight Johann von Randegg, who fell in the Battle of Sempach. The medieval castle was destroyed in the Swabian War of 1499. From 1567, a first palace was built under Gebhart von Schellenberg. During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops occupied the palace in 1638 and set it on fire when they withdrew in 1639. Another fire occurred in 1728. After several changes of ownership, including to the Augustinian Canons Regular of Beuron and the Barons von Deuring, Adolf Sheldon had the property renovated after 1899 and the Knights' Hall painted. In 1923, Dr. Hans Koch acquired the castle, and his descendants still own it today. From 1933 to 1936, the painter Otto Dix lived here with his family.
