Rannariedl Castle
In Rannariedl, a district of Neustift im Mühlkreis, stands Rannariedl Castle. The castle complex was originally built as a fortified castle in the 13th century and served to control and tax the Danube. It frequently changed owners.

The origins of Rannariedl Castle date back to around 1240, when it was built as a fortified castle. It was a fief of the Bishop of Passau and served to monitor the Danube. The first inhabitants were the Falkensteiners, who named themselves after the nearby Falkenstein Castle. Due to financial difficulties, the Falkensteiners had to pawn the castle in 1301. In the following centuries, ownership changed frequently, including to Gundacker von Tannberg and Reinprecht von Polheim. In 1484, Duke Georg of Lower Bavaria attempted to conquer the castle but failed. After legal proceedings, he received it as collateral but ceded it to Maximilian I in 1506. The Habsburgs pawned it to Max Öder in 1512. The 16th century saw further changes in ownership, including Hans Weisperger, Hans Hofmann, and Count Hans von Kevenhüller. During the Turkish threat in 1594, the castle served as a refuge but was plundered in the Peasants' War of 1595.
