Raymontpierre Castle (Vermes)

The origins of Raymontpierre Castle date back to the 16th century, when Georg Huge, a descendant of an old family from Delsberg, initiated its construction. He received the surrounding forests and pastures as a fief from Prince-Bishop Jakob Christoph Blarer von Wartensee and used the estate for the administration of these areas as well as for hunting. After Georg Huge's death in 1608 and the marriage of his daughter Anna to Hans Jakob von Staal in 1609, the castle passed into the possession of the Solothurn family von Staal. Hans Jakob von Staal, a significant figure, used Raymontpierre as a retreat. The Prince-Bishop saw the castle as a strategic outpost against the expanding Reformed from Bern. In 1623, the entire area came into the possession of Hans Jakob and his brother Justus von Staal. The von Staal family remained owners until 1809. After several changes of ownership, the Dozière AG factory from Delsberg acquired the castle in 1944 and carried out renovations.

Raymontpierre Castle is located in Vermes in the Delémont district of the Canton of Jura, Switzerland, at an altitude of approx. 927 m above sea level.

Today, Raymontpierre Castle is privately owned. It consists of a stately house, a chapel, and other buildings enclosing a quadrangular area. Corner round towers defend the complex. Inside, historical elements such as an arched gate with coats of arms and the year, a small arcade structure, and a chapel with a bell tower can still be found. A sculpted relief from 1623 with the coats of arms of the Raymontpierre and von Staal families, as well as Latin inscriptions, commemorates the castle's history. The Knights' Hall features an ornate fireplace from 1595.
