Reelkirchen Castle

The foundation of the moated complex in Reelkirchen dates back to the mid-16th century when Hermann VIII von Mengersen initiated its construction. He had already held the village and the associated manor as a fief from the Paderborn bishops since 1523. The core of the outer bailey dates from around 1600 and underwent renovation around 1774. The field-facing side was built of quarry stone and featured openings resembling loopholes. The courtyard side was constructed in half-timbered style, reusing a beam from 1550. A coat of arms of Hermann XIII von Mengersen and Agnes Freytag adorns the central passage. The stone moat bridge was completed in 1798, and the gardener's house, a small half-timbered building, likely dates from the 18th century. The current manor house was built in 1755 as a half-timbered house with a mansard roof and a solid plinth floor, later plastered.
