History+
The origins of the current Reichenbach Castle date back. A medieval castle once stood on its site, possibly tracing back to a Roman river fort connected to the Castrum on the Engehalbinsel peninsula. The dominion of Reichenbach, which encompassed present-day Zollikofen, was founded in the early 14th century by Rudolf von Erlach. In 1688, Beat Fischer, the founder of the Bernese postal service, had the current Baroque castle built. The Baroque frescoes in the courtroom date from this period. Around 1719, the castle was expanded, with stucco work created in the staircase and on the upper floor. At the same time, a brewery was built for the postal workers.
