Reichenberg Castle

To be privately owned

Reichenberg Castle is a castle located east of Reichenberg in the Würzburg district in Lower Franconia. It is privately owned by the von Seydlitz-Wolffskeel family and is a protected monument as a single architectural heritage site.

The complex was probably built as early as the beginning of the 13th century by the Lords of Reichenberg on fortified grounds. The castle was first mentioned in 1271. After being owned by the Franconian noble families Seinsheim and Hohenlohe, Knight Eberhard von Wolfskeel acquired it in 1376 as a feudal seat. Since then, the family has called itself "Wolfskeel von Reichenberg" after its ancestral seat. The castle is still owned by the family today, with Christoph and Karin von Seydlitz-Wolffskeel being the current owners.

During the German Peasants' War, the castle was partially destroyed in 1525. Of the original fortifications, only rudimentary remains of the wall and the base of a round tower are preserved today.

In the 17th century, the north wing of the castle was built, and in the 18th century, the south wing. The two residential buildings feature stepped gables and are built in the Renaissance style. The gable and the upper floor of the north wing were constructed in half-timbered style in 1615. Additionally, the south wing has baroque window frames. Around the approximately 400 m² trapezoidal inner courtyard, there are several outbuildings in addition to the residential buildings. The entire complex is surrounded by a triangular curtain wall.

In 1997, the castle was thoroughly restored. For this, the owners were awarded the Monument Protection Medal by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and Art.
